Sarvdeep Basur, during his long career, first as head of lighting design in Phillips (Asia Pacific Region) and then as head of Lucent has won many awards for landmark lighting projects like the Opera House in Sydney, The Armani Hotel in Dubai and Heritage monuments in Delhi. In China he is the principal designer for many on-going prestigious projects.
Sarvdeep has been regularly leading seminars on lighting design for architects, interior designers and students in India, China, and Africa, which have been well received by their respective communities. Sarvdeep came to Guangzhou for a salon in December, 2014. After that, he talked about his design philosophy and experience in the interview with Alighting Magazine.

在其一生的事業(yè)中，從飛利浦(亞太地區(qū))首席燈光設(shè)計師到Lucent的主負(fù)責(zé)人，Sarvdeep贏得過無數(shù)的榮譽。他曾領(lǐng)導(dǎo)設(shè)計過多個具劃時代意義燈光項目，如悉尼歌劇院、迪拜阿瑪尼酒店和德里歷史遺址。在中國，他是許多正在修建中的知名項目的主要設(shè)計師。
Sarvdeep也會定期舉辦燈光設(shè)計的研討會，主要面向建筑師、室內(nèi)設(shè)計師和設(shè)計專業(yè)學(xué)生，輻射印度、中國及非洲地區(qū)，廣受好評。2014年12月，Sarvdeep來穗?yún)⒓踊顒?，隨后也接受了《阿拉丁》的采訪，跟我們分享了他的設(shè)計理念和設(shè)計經(jīng)驗。
Alighting: How do you define yourself as a lighting designer?
《阿拉丁》：作為一位燈光設(shè)計師，您如何定義自己?
Sarvdeep: I believe in celebrating night. For me, night is for recreation, relaxation, romance and quality family time and it is light that sets the right mood. As a lighting designer I serve by creating the mood.
Sarvdeep：我熱衷于贊美夜晚。對我來說，夜晚意味著消遣、放松、浪漫和高質(zhì)量的家庭時光，正是燈光為夜晚營造了恰當(dāng)?shù)姆諊?。作為一名燈光設(shè)計師，我的使命就是用燈光來營造氛圍。
Alighting: What do you think is the most important factor in lighting design?
《阿拉丁》：在您看來，燈光設(shè)計中最重要的因素是什么?
Sarvdeep: Understanding people’s psychological response to various lighting scenarios and knowing how to achieve the right scenario with light is lighting design.
Sarvdeep：燈光設(shè)計就是要了解人對不同燈光情景有什么樣的心理反應(yīng)，并知道怎么通過燈光來營造適合的燈光場景。
Alighting: What is your design philosophy?
《阿拉丁》：您的設(shè)計理念是什么?
Sarvdeep: The right not more light can make any space, any feature attractive and beautiful.
Sarvdeep：用正確而不是多的燈光使任意空間、任意主題更加漂亮更加吸引人。
Alighting: You have clients from different countries. How to meet the cultural needs of different countries?
《阿拉丁》：您的客戶來自全球不同的國家，您是怎么滿足他們不同的文化需求的?
Sarvdeep: I spend a lot of time understanding the project needs and interacting with the right people.
Sarvdeep：我會花很多的時間去弄清楚項目的需求，并跟合適的人交流。
Alighting: How do you think the lighting profession in India? How do you think about the Chinese lighting design?
《阿拉丁》：您怎么看待印度的燈光設(shè)計職業(yè)?中國的燈光設(shè)計呢?
Sarvdeep: Lighting design in India and China is going through the similar phases, these are exciting times as we are learning that more light is not always the best solution and understanding that darkness is also part of lighting design. I am impressed by the way young lighting designers are using the modern tools and experimenting to produce great results.
Sarvdeep：燈光設(shè)計在印度和中國都正在經(jīng)歷相似的階段。這是令人興奮的時代，因為我們開始認(rèn)識到越來越亮并不總是最好的解決方案，也漸漸明白，黑暗也應(yīng)該是燈光設(shè)計的一部分。讓我很受觸動的是，年輕燈光設(shè)計師們正在嘗試運用現(xiàn)代的工具和實驗性的方式，創(chuàng)造出不同凡響的成果。
Alighting: What impresses you most while working for Chinese clients? What’s the difference from the other clients?
《阿拉丁》：中國客戶給您最深的印象是什么?與其他國家或地區(qū)的客戶有什么不一樣?
Sarvdeep: I shall be honest, initially it was a little tough to understand each other and the language barrier did not help, but now after 5 years I am happy to work here and I have made great friends through mutual appreciation.
Sarvdeep：我必須誠實地說，最開始的時候因為語言障礙，相互理解都有點困難。但五年之后，我很為自己在這兒工作感到高興，也交到了一些相互欣賞的好朋友。
Alighting: You have done lighting design for great architectures of different types. What do you think is the biggest difference between them?
《阿拉丁》：您為不同類型的著名建筑做過燈光設(shè)計，在您看來，它們之間最大的不同點在于什么?
Sarvdeep: This is a very difficult question to answer as architecture varies in so many ways in size, shape, utility, culture, etc. I think the biggest difference is the mind behind that particular structure.
Sarvdeep：這個不好說，因為不同建筑在規(guī)模、外形、功能、文化背景等方面都有所不同。我認(rèn)為最大的不同在于特定建筑背后所蘊含的思維過程。
Alighting: How to balance the functionality and aesthetics in lighting design?
《阿拉丁》：燈光設(shè)計如何平衡功能和美學(xué)的要求?
Sarvdeep: Functionality is science and aesthetics is art and balancing them is design for me. If adequate thought is given to both art and science, human mind is smart enough to create the right blend.
Sarvdeep：功能是科學(xué)性的，美學(xué)是藝術(shù)性的。平衡兩者的關(guān)系就是我的設(shè)計。如果能對藝術(shù)性和科學(xué)性都給予充分的考量，聰明如人類，必會找到完美的結(jié)合點。
Alighting: What attract you the most? Is it the process of design or the sense of achievement after a work finished, or anything else?
《阿拉丁》：什么最吸引您?是設(shè)計的過程還是設(shè)計完成后的成就感?或者其他?
Sarvdeep: Both equally, when I start designing a project I have already conceived the result in my mind.
Sarvdeep：兩者都有。當(dāng)我開始設(shè)計一個項目的時候，我已經(jīng)在腦子里聯(lián)想到它完成時候的情景了。
Alighting: Did you do the lighting design for your own house? How is it like?
《阿拉丁》：您有為自己的房子做燈光設(shè)計嗎?是什么樣子的?
Sarvdeep: Yes, the lighting of my house is blend of art and science and is just adequate; however the landscape is more dependent on natural moonlight which is not my work.
Sarvdeep：有。我家房子的燈光融合了藝術(shù)和科學(xué)，而且是很適度的。然而戶外景觀部分，其實更加依賴于自然月光的妝點，這就不在我的工作范圍里了。
Alighting: What’s your favorite project? Could you share with us?
《阿拉丁》：您最喜歡自己的哪個項目?可以跟我們分享一下嗎?
Sarvdeep: This is your most difficult question, can a parent choose a favorite amongst his children? It would be impossible for me to answer this one. We are doing about 120 projects at this time, The Golden Temple in Amritsar (India) is most of my time, hence the most attention these days.
Sarvdeep：這個問題最難回答了，就好像要讓父母選擇他們最喜愛的孩子一樣，可能選得出來嗎?至少對我來說不可以。目前我們正在進行的項目有120個左右，但花費時間最多的是印度阿姆利則金廟，這也是現(xiàn)在的重點項目。
